Bangor was first settled by Jacob Buswell in 1769. Originally, the city was called Condeskeag Plantation. Within three years, the city was home to a dozen families, a school, store and sawmill. By 1779, the town was populated by 567 people and sought to be incorporated by 1791. Allegedly, the city’s residents wanted it to be called Sunbury. But they sent the Rev. Seth Noble to Boston on their behalf and he preferred the name Bangor (the name of a hymn by William Tans’ur). The 19th century saw Bangor boom as a lumber town, the identifying economic trait of the city for years to come.

Today, Bangor has a fairly diverse economy. Their downtown is home to all kinds of retailers that sell everything from books to clothing and even art. There are also museums, galleries and hotels. The city is also home to a military installation dedicated to testing aircraft.
