Located along the Mississippi River, Davenport is home to over 100,000 people. It was named for Colonel George Davenport, a friend of founder Antoine LeClaire, who started the city back in 1836. Colonel Davenport had served during the Black Hawk War. Originally, LeClaire received a majority of what is now Davenport through his wife, who was gifted it from Chief Keokuk. LeClaire’s wife was the granddaughter of a Sauk chief. In accordance with the contract, LeClaire built his “Treaty House” in the exact place the deal was struck.
