The city was officially founded and named back in 1880. In 1908, Plumb Valley, Minnesota changed its name to Waldorf, in honor of the city. Its original economy revolved around tobacco production, but eventually gambling brought in the biggest crowds. This lasted until 1968, at which point gambling was outlawed. With this revenue gone, the city needed a loan from HUD to redevelop as a planned community.

Today, the city was mostly a bedroom community for those who work in Washington DC. However, Waldorf is home to countless dealerships that all make colocation a necessity.
