Grand Forks was originally a favorite area of French fur trappers to frequent. It became so popular that, by the 1740s, it was an established outpost for trading. However, it wouldn’t be until 1870 that a US Post Office would be established there. At that time, though, the name was changed to Grand Forks from the French for the same words, Les Grandes Fourches. Like so many cities of its time, Grand Forks really came into its own after the inception of the Great Northern Railway in 1880. Seven years later, the Northern Pacific Railway would get a foothold there too.

While agriculture has always played a strong role in Grand Forks’ economy, and continues to do so, a number of other industries play their part too. These include defense, education, healthcare, food processing, and manufacturing. The city’s largest employer is Altru Health System, with Grand Forks Air Force Base coming in at a close second. These two companies and all their contemporaries make Grand Forks colocation services a necessity.
