The French were the first Europeans to settle Erie. They built their Fort Presque Isle by the present day city in 1753. This was their attempt at defending their New France against the British forces that were threatening to take it over. Eventually, however, the French simply deserted the fort in 1760. That same year, the British took it over. Later Erie would become the target of a dispute between Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, and Connecticut, all of which laid claim to it. The matter was settled in 1792 after the federal government took hold of it and eventually sold it to Pennsylvania.
Erie’s access to the Great Lakes has served its economy well over the years. The Erie Insurance Group also has its corporate headquarters there as does Marquette Savings Bank. These and other large companies demand colocation services.
