Private Cage Colocation Pricing in Major U.S. Markets

So, what’s this going to cost? Below is a snapshot of monthly cage colocation pricing (per kW of power) as of 2026, comparing smaller deployments (~10 kW in power, a few racks) to larger ones (~50 kW, which might be a full multi-rack cage) across key U.S. data center markets. These estimates are drawn from real quotes our vetted providers have offered. (For context, primary markets like Ashburn or Silicon Valley tend to be pricier, while markets with cheap power like Phoenix or Dallas often come in lower.)

Market~10 kW Cage
$/kW / month~50 kW Cage
$/kW / month
Ashburn, VA (NoVA)~$162/kW~$135/kW
Silicon Valley, CA~$158/kW~$131/kW
New York / New Jersey~$153/kW~$126/kW
Los Angeles, CA~$144/kW~$117/kW
Chicago, IL~$135/kW~$108/kW
Dallas, TX~$126/kW~$99/kW
Phoenix, AZ~$117/kW~$90/kW
Seattle, WA~$122/kW~$104/kW
Atlanta, GA~$113/kW~$95/kW
Miami, FL~$122/kW~$104/kW

Notes: These estimated averages reflect 2026 retail market rates for cage colocation. Actual quotes will depend on your exact specs – e.g. the facility tier, your precise kW draw, redundancy (A+B power), bandwidth needs, contract term, and any special requirements. We assumed a baseline (Tier III data center, redundant power, ~1 Gbps network port) for the above. With QuoteColo, pricing can often come in lower due to negotiated discounts. For a custom quote tailored to your needs, just ask – we’ll deliver options and exact pricing specific to your cage requirements.

Private Cage Colocation at a Glance

A private cage is essentially a secure, enclosed colocation space dedicated to your equipment within a larger data center. It offers a middle-ground between leasing individual racks and an entire private suite, giving you exclusive use of a section of the data hall. Below is a quick overview of why companies choose cage colocation, as well as considerations to keep in mind:

    Pros of Private Cage Colocation:

    • Enhanced Security & Privacy: Your hardware is housed behind a locked cage that only you (and your designees) can access. This physical barrier provides an extra layer of protection against unauthorized access or accidental interference. It’s ideal for sensitive environments that demand strict access control and isolation.
    • Compliance Support: Private cages help meet regulatory and compliance requirements. Many frameworks (PCI DSS, HIPAA, ISO 27001, etc.) mandate strong physical security – a cage gives you a dedicated, audited space that aligns with those standards. In short, it’s easier to check the compliance boxes when your gear is in its own secure enclosure.
    • Customizable Environment: Unlike shared colocation, a cage is your space – you can often customize the layout, power distribution, cooling setup, and even add specialized security (cameras, biometric locks, etc.) as needed. Need a specific rack arrangement or custom cage hosting setup? It’s usually doable. And if you have unique equipment sizes or cabling needs, a cage provides the flexibility to accommodate them.
    • High-Density Capable: Private cages can handle power-hungry deployments. Because you’re allocated dedicated power feeds, you can run multiple high-density racks side by side – great for GPU clusters, AI training rigs, or other HPC gear. Many cage-friendly facilities support high-density cages (e.g. 10–50 kW per rack) without breaking a sweat. This means you get the benefits of high power and cooling capacity in a controlled space built for it.
    • Vendor Choice & Scalability: With a cage, you often have access to all the carriers and connectivity in the facility (it’s usually a carrier-neutral space). You can cross-connect to cloud providers, ISPs, etc., as needed. And while a cage is smaller than a private suite, you can usually scale within that cage (by adding more racks up to the cage’s footprint) or expand to a larger cage over time. It’s a pay-as-you-grow model – you start with a cage sized for today and have room to grow tomorrow.

    Cons (Considerations) of Cage Colocation:

    • Higher Cost vs. Single Racks: Exclusivity isn’t free. A private cage typically costs more per kW or per rack than renting a single locked cabinet in a shared space, because you’re paying for the dedicated floor space and custom security build-out. There may be minimum power commitments or a requirement to lease multiple racks to justify a cage.
    • Minimum Commitments: Data centers often require a minimum size or power draw for a cage deployment. In practice, that might mean needing at least 2–4 racks or a certain kW level. (Many top providers won’t offer anything smaller than a full cabinet in general, and cages usually imply multiple cabinets.) So very small deployments might not qualify for a cage at some facilities.
    • Less Cost-Efficient at Small Scale: If you only need one or two racks, a cage could be overkill – you’ll be paying a premium for unused space. Cages make more sense once your deployment is a few racks or more, or if you absolutely require isolation. For small footprints, standard colocation cabinets might be more economical (until you grow).
    • Longer Lead Times: Setting up a cage can take a bit longer than a simple rack rental. The data center may need to install the actual cage enclosure (mesh walls, door, lock, etc.) if it’s not already built. This could add some lead time to your deployment. Additionally, custom power drops or network provisioning for a cage might take extra coordination.
    • Not as “Unlimited” as a Suite: While cages offer some room to grow, they do have physical limits. If you anticipate needing dozens of racks or a very large footprint, you might eventually outgrow a cage and need to move to a private suite. Cages can still handle a lot (often dozens of racks), but extremely large enterprises might skip straight to a dedicated suite or wholesale space for maximum flexibility.

In terms of geography, not all markets are equal. Some regions have far more data center competition – and better pricing – than others. Major U.S. colocation hubs like Northern Virginia (Ashburn), Silicon Valley, New York/New Jersey, Chicago, Los Angeles and Dallas have many providers vying for business, which keeps cage pricing competitive. These primary markets often average around $160 per kW per month for mid-size deals. By contrast, power-rich markets such as Phoenix (and even Dallas) can run 20–30% lower in cost, thanks to cheaper land and energy. On the other hand, smaller or less competitive regions might see higher prices due to limited options.

Bottom line: Companies choose secure private cages for a few key reasons – compliance, enhanced security, and support for high-power infrastructure – and they tend to hunt in markets where they can get the best value. We can advise you on which regions offer the best bang for your buck for your cage colocation needs.

    Who We Help

Organizations of all shapes and sizes turn to QuoteColo for secure colocation space – from scrappy startups to heavily regulated enterprises. Our private cage colocation matchmaking is particularly popular with:

    • AI & Machine Learning Startups – Need to host GPU-heavy clusters or high-density training rigs in a safe, power-dense environment. A cage ensures those costly servers are secure and running full-throttle.

      No client is too small

One misconception is that private cages are only for huge enterprises. Not true. We believe no client is too small – if a cage is what you need, we’ll make it happen. Even if you’re a startup with just a couple racks worth of gear, we’ll ensure you get “white-glove treatment and a proper home” for your hardware. Many big data centers ignore the “little guys,” but we don’t. Whether you need a half-cage for a pilot project or have plans to grow into a larger cage over time, QuoteColo will support you every step of the way. You’ll get the same level of attention as any big client.

(In fact, our CEO Bob Spiegel likes to remind customers: if you have any high-density or custom requirement – even a single server – we’ll treat it with the same care as a megawatt deployment. No client is “too small” in our eyes.)

      Frequently Asked Questions

We’re happy to answer any other questions you have about cage colocation. Here are answers to some common questions:

Is there a minimum size or commitment for a private cage?

It depends on the provider, but generally yes, there is a minimum. Most data centers require you to lease a certain amount of space or power to justify a private cage. In practice, this often means at least a few cabinets (e.g. a 2-rack or 4-rack cage minimum) or a minimum kW commitment. The exact threshold varies: some smaller regional facilities might build a cage for 2 cabinets, whereas large providers might require a higher commitment. (For example, many top colocation providers won’t offer anything less than a full cabinet even for standard colo, so for a cage they might expect multiple cabinets.) Also, longer contract terms (12+ months) are more common with cages due to the dedicated setup. The good news is we work with many vendors – if you only need a modest cage, we’ll do our best to find a facility willing to accommodate that scale.

Can a private cage help with our security or compliance requirements?

Absolutely. Private cages are often chosen specifically for security and compliance reasons. With a cage, your gear is physically separated from other customers’ equipment by locked mesh walls or partitions. This gives you a uniform, controlled access point – you can strictly limit who can enter. It supports compliance regimes like PCI-DSS, HIPAA, FedRAMP, etc., which require controlled physical access and audit logs. In fact, many compliance frameworks expect sensitive systems to be in a dedicated, access-restricted area – a private cage meets that need. Additionally, most colocation facilities themselves have certifications (SOC 2, ISO 27001, etc.), and a cage adds an extra layer on top. We can match you with providers who have the certifications your auditors demand.

Can we customize the cage layout or expand it later if needed?

Yes. One of the advantages of cage colocation is the flexibility to customize your environment. You can usually work with the data center to arrange the racks/equipment inside your cage as you see fit (subject to safety and clearance guidelines). Need a specific rack orientation, locking cabinets within the cage, or extra space for cable management? That’s typically feasible. You can also often install additional security within your cage (for example, your own CCTV camera monitoring your cage, or special locks) if required. As for expansion – many providers will allow you to add more racks to your cage over time (if space in that room permits). If you think you’ll need to grow, it’s wise to communicate that upfront; sometimes they can reserve adjacent space. In a worst-case scenario, if you outgrow your cage, the provider can often migrate you to a larger cage or a private suite in the same facility as a next step. Bottom line: cages offer a degree of custom build-out capability and upgrade path that standard colocation can’t.

How do we install our equipment in a private cage?

When you sign a cage colocation deal, the provider will prepare the space for you (set up the cage enclosure, power circuits, connectivity, etc.). Installing your servers can be handled a couple of ways: you can ship your gear to the data center and have the on-site technicians rack it for you, or you can bring it in yourself. Most of our clients ship their equipment and then schedule a remote-hands service or a visit to do the final installation. Colocation facilities are very experienced with “rack and stack” tasks – they can receive your crates, unpack and mount servers in the racks, cable everything up, and get you online. Often basic installation assistance is included or available at a reasonable hourly rate. And you maintain full control – you (or your team) can access your cage 24/7 to do work as needed. The facilities have processes to allow your authorized personnel in at any time (with security checks). Plus, if you ever need hands-on help and can’t be there, data centers offer remote hands support to handle things like power cycling a server, moving a cable, swapping a hard drive, etc. Essentially, installation and maintenance in a cage is a collaborative effort – you direct what’s needed, and either your staff or the remote technicians execute it.

Do colocation cages come with redundant power (A+B feeds)?

Yes – in any reputable data center, you can get A+B redundant power for a private cage deployment. Redundant power means two separate power circuits (usually from independent UPS power banks) feeding your equipment, so that if one circuit fails or is taken down for maintenance, the other can carry the load. In practice, for a cage setup you might have two power distribution units (PDUs) in your cage, each on a separate feed (A and B). Tier III and above facilities provide this by default for higher-tier contracts. If high availability is important to you, QuoteColo will ensure the quotes you get include A+B power. We’ll specify the amperage/voltage of each circuit in the quote details. Keep in mind, redundant power typically doubles the number of circuits, but many providers only charge ~25–30% extra for the second feed (since it’s usually on standby). It’s well worth it for mission-critical deployments. We can also clarify how the power is delivered (208V 3-phase vs 208V single-phase, etc.) based on your needs.

What security measures are in place for a private cage?

With a private cage, physical security operates at two levels: the facility and your cage. At the facility level, modern data centers have 24×7 security personnel, CCTV cameras everywhere, multi-factor access (badge, biometric, man-traps), and strict sign-in procedures. Your cage is within that secure environment, adding another layer: the cage itself is locked and only authorized individuals from your team (and the data center staff, if needed) can unlock it. Typically, cages use either key locks or badge readers for access; some can even be tied into biometric systems. Because a cage usually has one entry point, it’s easy to monitor and log every entry – data centers can provide audit logs of who accessed the cage and when, which is great for compliance. Additionally, the cage barrier (usually steel mesh or bars) prevents any casual contact with your gear – no one can even touch your racks without being inside the cage. You can also often request additional measures like a ceiling (to prevent someone climbing over) or finer mesh (to prevent reaching through). In summary, your equipment in a cage is highly secure: it’s inside a building that’s already secure, and then it’s fenced off in its own locked zone.

What contract terms are typical for cage colocation?

Most colocation contracts (cage or otherwise) range from 12 to 36 months in length. We see 12-month and 24-month terms very commonly for private cages. Longer terms (e.g. 3-year) sometimes get you better pricing per kW, while shorter terms offer flexibility. Some providers do offer month-to-month or 6-month contracts on cage space, but often at a premium rate (since they prefer the commitment). With QuoteColo’s process, you can let us know your term preference and we’ll have providers quote accordingly – and if you want to see a couple of term options (say 1 year vs 3 years) for comparison, we can arrange that too. Also, if you anticipate growth or changes, we can negotiate things like rights of first refusal on adjacent space, or custom clauses to upgrade within the term. Our goal is to get you a fair contract that aligns with your business needs – whether that’s maximum flexibility or maximum savings.

Are remote hands and monitoring services available for cages?

Yes. Colocation providers universally offer remote hands support – think of it as having a technician on-call at the data center to do physical tasks for you. For cage customers, basic remote hands (rebooting a server, checking indicator lights, reseating a cable) is often included or provided at low cost. More advanced tasks (like replacing a component or installing new hardware you ship in) can usually be done as well, though there might be an hourly fee. When we present quotes, we’ll note the remote-hands policy: some providers include a certain number of hours per month, others charge per half-hour, etc. Additionally, the data center’s NOC (Network Operations Center) will monitor power, cooling, and network in your cage as part of the service. If something goes wrong (like a circuit trips or a temperature threshold is exceeded), they’ll alert you immediately. Many facilities have portal software where you can see environmental readings, camera feeds, and support ticket status for your cage. In short, even if you rarely set foot in the data center, you can manage a cage deployment with confidence: there’s always someone on-site to assist, and systems in place to monitor your gear’s well-being. (And of course, you can visit your cage anytime if you want to do work in person – 24/7 access is standard.)
